This is the beginning of a Basic Equine DNA Parent Verification Information Page, as there seems to be allot of confusion and potentially misinformation regarding Equine DNA Profiles, and Equine DNA Parentage Verification.
Basic Equine DNA Profile and Equine DNA Parent Verification facts:
It is important to understand that at this time, there is no Laboratory Test available to identify any equine with 100% certainty as purebred, as per breed.
A DNA Profile is NOT the same as a DNA Parent Verification Test.
A DNA Profile is created by the Laboratory for an individual equine by recording specific genetic markers.
DNA Profiles can be compared to determine Parent Verification.
What DNA Parent Verification Testing "can" do, is confirm or exclude, a specific Sire or Dam as a Parent by comparing Parent DNA Profiles to the DNA Profile of offspring.
The main DNA testing that registries utilize is to verify Parentage, not if an equine is Purebred or a specific breed.
Example for DNA Parent Verification Service:
Sire has Individual DNA Profile Report provided, or on file with Laboratory.
Dam has Individual DNA Profile Report provided, or on file with Laboratory.
Individual DNA Profile is created for Foal stated to be offspring of above Sire and Dam.
Laboratory Service is requested to verify Parents via DNA Parent Verification of said Foal.
Laboratory tests by comparing Foal’s DNA Profile to Sire’s DNA Profile to verify or exclude Sire, and tests Foal’s DNA Profile to Dam’s DNA Profile to verify or exclude Dam.
Animal up breeding Calculations
Animal up breeding has been proven, through Scientific Research the World over in Animal Husbandry Breeding practices. Select up breeding programs have been utilized, to establish and create new breeds of animals, and or, to preserve rare and endangered Livestock Breeds.
The following example will always include in each generation, a Sire that is recognized as 100 % Purebred. Utilizing a recognized Purebred Sire each generation, eventually in 5 generations results in producing offspring that possess less than 5 % out cross genetics, and are scientifically considered Purebred. The small amount of 5% or less, outside influence of genetics, becomes no longer significant.
Comparatively, F5 and F6 matings, and the matings of offspring produced from F5 and F6 matings, have already established the foundation of desired inheritable traits for the gene pool. Worthy F5 and F6 Stock can then be a consideration, to mate with the already established 100 % Purebred Stock, resulting in all Offspring recognized as Purebred.
‼️ Formula: ___% mated with ___% (add percentage of each) = ___ + ___% = ___ (divided by 2, because both parents contribute) = ___% of resulting offspring.
F1~created with 100% mated with an outcross animal = 100 divided by 2 = 50 %
F2~ created with 100% mated with F1 a 50% = 150 divided by 2 = 75 %
F3~ created with 100% mated with F2 a 75% = 175 divided by 2 = 87.5 %
F4~ created with 100% mated with F3 a 87.5% = 187.5 divided by 2 = 93.75 %
F5~ created with 100% mated with F4 a 93.75% = 193.75 % divided by 2 = 96.875 % (and has less than 5% outcross or outside genetic influence)
‼️ Remember, if the outside genetic influence is 5 % or less, it is not genetically significant. An animal that is 31/32, or greater than 95 % of a specific breed is considered a purebred.
*F6 ~ created with 100% mated with F5 96.875 % = 196.875 % divided by 2 = 98.4375 %
* By utilizing Selective breeding of worthy specimens, that possess preferred attributes through out the up breeding process of F1 through F5, and F1 through F6 matings, the desired characteristics and attributes are, and should be progressing and producing uniformity, with a high % of consistency in the F5 and F6 Offspring.
F6~100% mated with F5 98.4375 = 198.4375 divided by 2 = 99.21875% (or 99 %)
The following example provided utilizes F5 and or F6 individuals as Sire and Dam.
F5 98.4375 % mated with F5 *98.4375 % = 196.875 divided by 2 = *98.4375 %
F6 99% mated with F6 *99% = 198 divided by 2 = divided by 2 = *99%
