Recognized as a highly popular and rapidly developing breed, these Gypsy Equines combine the heavy bone and docile nature of the Gypsy Cob with the elite athletic, working attributes of the beloved American Stock Horse Breeds. 

Important Notice: Registry Stud Books Merging 

• The Transition: To better align with the working capabilities and heritage of these magnificent crosses, the IGEA Registry is officially merging the former Gypsy Stock Horse and Gypsy Stock Pony Stud Books into the Gypsy Ranch Horse and Gypsy Ranch Pony Stud Books.

• Historical Records: All previously registered "Gypsy Stock" equines retain their full standing and are seamlessly integrated into this updated breed division.

Owner Stud Book Registration Choice: Gypsy Ranch vs. Gypsy Sport 

The IGEA Registry recognizes that this specific Gypsy crossed with a standard Stock Horse breed can excel in multiple disciplines. Therefore, owners and breeders are given the absolute freedom to choose which stud book best fits the Individual Stock they are registering with the following considerations:

• The Core Distinction: The Gypsy Ranch Horse/Pony is recognized and recorded as a Developing Breed in an IGEA Select Breeding Program and focused on working ranch attributes and performance.

• The Gypsy Sport Horse/Pony is strictly a Stud Book focused on traditional athletic sport disciplines. 

• Owner's Choice: If your individual horse is a cross between a Gypsy (or Mini Gypsy) and an approved American Stock Horse breed, you may choose either the Gypsy Ranch Stud Book or the Gypsy Sport Stud Book at the time of registration. 

The IGEA Premier Gypsy Ranch Stud Book 

This elite tier is reserved for horses meeting advanced genetic parameters and strict height divisions.

• Size Divisions:

  • IGEA Gypsy Ranch Horse: Height strictly over 14.2 Hands (58 inches), measured at the highest point of the wither.

  • IGEA Gypsy Ranch Pony: Height up to and including 14.2 Hands (58 inches), measured at the highest point of the wither.

• Genetic Requirements: Must possess a minimum of 25% Gypsy genetics and a maximum of 87% Gypsy genetics.

• Approved Outcrosses: The non-Gypsy lineage must be a recognized American Stock Horse or American Stock Pony Breed or approved cross thereof: Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, Appaloosa, Morgan. Pony Of Americas  or Quarter Pony.

• DNA is required.

• Health Panel Testing (Optional): Full genetic health panels are strongly encouraged. Equines with health panels on file will receive an official "Health Panel Testing Results on File" notation on their certificate (specific results are kept confidential and are not printed directly on the document).

The IGEA Base Gypsy Ranch & Stock Stud Book 

• Foundational Tracking: To protect the historical development of this breed, our established base book remains open to qualify foundational crosses that may not meet the narrow elite boundaries of the Premier book. This ensures no valuable heritage bloodlines are locked out of the registry.

The "INTL" (International) Prefix Designation 

We proudly recognize and track high-percentage Gypsy genetics within our crossbred registry using a distinct honorary prefix.

• The 75% Rule: The INTL (International) prefix is granted exclusively to IGEA-registered Gypsy Cross equines that possess 75% or more verified Gypsy Horse genetics.

• Official Document Display: Stallions, Mares, and Geldings meeting this 75% threshold will have the INTL prefix officially added in front of their name on their Registration Certificate.

• Phenotypic Characteristics: This prefix serves as an official designation that while these individuals are genetically verified crossbreds, their high percentage of Gypsy heritage means they may visually exhibit physical traits, bone, and feathering (phenotype) of a purebred Gypsy Cob.

• Base Crosses: Gypsy Equines possessing less than 75% Gypsy Genetics are fully registered but will not display the INTL prefix on their final certificate.

IGEA Gypsy Ranch Breed Description 

General Appearance

• Build & Conformation: Compact, strong build with powerful, ample muscle and flat bone. Bone structure must be noticeably heavier and thicker than a standard light Stock Horse. Balanced in proportion, standing straight, square, and deep through the girth.

• Hair & Coat: Plentiful mane, thick forelock, and dense tail hair (including double manes). Hairy fetlocks are required; leg feathering ranges from sparse to abundant depending on the genetic percentage of Gypsy blood. Facial hair, mustaches, and beards are fully accepted. All colors and patterns are welcome.

Conformation Specifics

• Head & Neck: Expressive, noble head with a straight profile and clean, strong jaw. Excessive coarseness, heavy Roman noses, or dished faces are discouraged. The neck is strong, well-muscled, slightly arched, and ties neatly into a deep, sloping shoulder. Clean through the throat latch.

• Body & Hindquarters: Broad, short-coupled, strong back with a wide loin and deep, well-sprung ribs. Hindquarters are generous, broad, rounded, and powerful, supported by clean, straight hocks and strong forelegs set squarely under the body.

• Mouth & Hooves: Even, level bite. Hooves must be tough, wide-heeled, and well-developed to carry the horse's heavy frame without stress. Pasterns must correctly match the angle of the shoulder.

• Movement & Temperament: Naturally flowing, correct, and effortless walk, trot, and canter. Character must be docile, willing, eager to please, and highly respectful.
