Welcome to the official registry home of the IGEA Miniature/Mini Gypsy Horse. Founded over a decade ago as an ambitious pioneer program, this IGEA Select Breeding Program has meticulously monitored both recognized purebred mini gypsy cobs and specific mini gypsy cross genetics.
Ten plus years of rigorous breeding data and careful tracking of multi-generational bloodlines have provided vital clarity on how these unique equine genetics evolve. To honor this genetic reality, maximize breeder market value, and eliminate international size confusion, the IGEA Select Breeding Program officially organizes this program into a unified, transparent structural pathway consisting of four distinct, structural sections.
Section A (Premier Status):
Mature Height Limits: 34 inches and under at maturity (Age 5).
Genetic & Mating Rules: DNA verified Gypsy genetics.
Purpose: Miniature size by American miniature size standards, "cream of the crop" gypsy draft type possessing bone and feather in a tiny balanced frame.
Section B (Premier Status):
Mature Height Limits: Over 34 inches, up to and including 38 inches at maturity (Age 5).
Genetic & Mating Rules: DNA verified Gypsy genetics.
Purpose: Miniature size by American miniature size standards, "cream of the crop" gypsy draft type possessing bone and feather in a tiny balanced frame.
Section C - Gypsy Pony (Premier Status):
Mature Height Limits: Over 38 inches, up to and including 48 inches at maturity (Age 5).
Genetic & Mating Rules: DNA verified Gypsy genetics.
Primarily produced by mating worthy Mini Gypsy Cross × Mini Gypsy Cross with very selective back-breeding to the smallest available purebred Mini Gypsy Cobs is permitted, as well as higher percentage small Mini Gypsy Crosses or INTL Mini Gypsy Horses.
Purpose: Dedicated to the highly popular, powerful, and athletic performance in Pony size, as well as preferred breeding stock.
Section D - INTL Mini Gypsy Horse:
Mature Height Limits: up to and including 52 inches (13 Hands) at maturity.
Genetic & Mating Rules: Requires 75% or greater Gypsy genetics. Typically utilizes a purebred Mini Gypsy Cob or slightly over 13 Hand purebred Gypsy Cob in each generation.
Purpose: Tracks high-percentage up-breeding lines where increased bone and heavy hair traits naturally produce a larger 12-to-13 Hand stature.
To qualify for entry into the Premier Tiers (Sections A, B, and C), all individual candidates must meet the following criteria:
Age of Maturity: All applicants must be at least 5 years of age for Sections A and B, and C to apply for official entry into Premium Stud Books.
Required Documentation: An official IGEA Height Record Certification Form must be fully completed by a verified authority and submitted alongside the primary registration application or if already Registered with a completed
Evaluation form.
DNA verified Gypsy genetics is required.
Health Panel Testing (Optional): Advanced genetic health panels are optional but strongly encouraged.
Strict Photographic Criteria
Applications must include four (4) high-quality photographs capturing the horse from the following angles: Right Side, Left Side, Front, and Rear. All photos must meet these strict presentation rules:
Full Body Coverage: Photos must clearly show the equine’s full body from head to hoof at each specified angle.
Ground Surface Clarity: The horse must be standing on completely level ground with zero obstruction of vision where the hooves meet the ground surface. There must be no tall grass, deep bedding, stones, or dirt blocking a clear view of hoof contact.
Recommended Surfaces: We strongly suggest standing the horse on a smooth, flat surface such as a concrete slab, paved driveway, smooth stone surface, or a freshly cut, short mowed level lawn.

The IGEA Mini Gypsy Cross: Any initial cross of an IGEA Mini Gypsy Cob with a Miniature Horse or small Welsh Pony. This remains the foundational core of the program, requiring a minimum of 12.5% Gypsy genetics. While anyone can produce a first-generation cross, it takes elite planning, patience, and selection to refine these lines to produce eligible stock for the Section A, B, or C Premier Books and the INTL Mini Gypsy Horse.
Internal Upgrades: Stock currently registered in alternative IGEA books—such as Mini Gypsy Cross, Mini Gypsy Horse, Gypsy Draft Pony Cross, or Gypsy Draft Pony—may apply for permanent upgrade into Sections A, B, or C upon reaching physical maturity and eligibility. Eligible stock registered with other recognized Gypsy Registries are welcome to apply.
To provide absolute clarity for our members and the global equine community, the IGEA Registry maintains a strict genetic and structural distinction between a Purebred Mini Gypsy Cob and a Miniature Gypsy Horse. While both lines share stunning looks and exceptional temperaments, they represent completely separate breeding tracks within the IGEA Select Breeding Program.
What It Is: A recognized purebred Gypsy Cob that matures at a shorter height and may even be capable of producing smaller specimens like itself. These foundation Mini Gypsy Cobs that were originally imported, along with their direct offspring, are officially recognized by the IGEA as purebred, even when imported with a historical oral ancestry when they meet phenotype.
The Genetic Reality: These Mini Gypsy Cobs carry traditional size gypsy genetics that happen to express on the smaller side. Because their DNA holds these deep draft markers, breeding two purebred Mini Gypsy Cobs together may result in an evolutionary "throwback," causing their offspring to shoot right back up in height to over 13 Hands at maturity. (Please keep in mind that in the UK and Britain, a miniature-sized Gypsy Cob is traditionally considered to be 13 Hands and under in size).
The Modern Ledger Progress: American breeders of recognized Purebred Mini Gypsy Cobs have worked tirelessly to secure vital DNA parentage verification back to overseas ancestors whenever possible. Modern genetic testing has drastically advanced our knowledge, helping us identify specific short-stature genetic height markers within these bloodlines. This scientific data provides incredible insight into how the original Gypsy Cob—and the modern Mini Gypsy Cob—can retain its historic genetic foundation, which has Draft Size equine equine genetics also infused centuries ago with the lovely native UK pony breeds smaller equine genetics.
2. The IGEA Miniature Gypsy Horse (The New Breed):
What It Is: An IGEA Miniature Gypsy Horse is an independent, newly recognized breed developed over a ten-year timeline through selective, multi-generational down-sizing under the IGEA Select Breeding Program. Note: a few American Breeders have been in pursuit of this endeavor 5 years prior to the IGEA Select Breeding Program. These breeders have 15 years of knowledge, experience and proven breeding stock produced in this endeavor.
The Genetics: This breed is produced by carefully blending purebred Mini Gypsy Cobs with small-equine outcrosses (such as Miniature Horses or small Welsh Ponies) to lock in actual small-stature genes. True stabilization is achieved by breeding worthy small Mini Gypsy Crosses directly to small Mini Gypsy Crosses, with a goal to create an equine that stands a true miniature height of 38 inches and under at 5 years of age. These selective matings are producing an individual with increased bone, a balanced small draft type build, with increased hair factor in mane, tail, and leg feather that possess he desirable Gypsy temperament.
Our ten-plus years of hard data have proven that the desired traits for hair, feather, and flat bone are cumulative. These traits are consistently expressing themselves even more in 3rd and 4th generations produced directly from selective Mini Gypsy Cross to Mini Gypsy Cross matings.
Once these stable multi-generational bloodlines reach maturity, they become highly suitable candidates to consider for very selective matings, to infuse more bone and hair genetics with less chance of spiking the height up, breeders may carefully pair them back to:
A small, mature, higher-percentage Section C Gypsy Pony.
A small high-percentage Section D INTL Mini Gypsy Horse.
A small IGEA Gypsy Draft Pony.
A recognized, very small Purebred Mini Gypsy Cob (if available because 10 hands and under is extremely rare the world over).
To maintain absolute transparency in this collective mission, the IGEA openly notes a historical reality: many of the recognized purebred mini gypsy cobs initially imported into the United States—or their immediate domestic offspring—possess a deep, historically recognized oral tradition of their recognized purebred Gypsy ancestry.
However, when the IGEA program began over a decade ago—and indeed for many individuals arriving today—they did not carry a written, laboratory-proven DNA lineage registry trail matching them upon entry.
Because traditional overseas breeding was largely unrecorded on paper, the IGEA took on the responsibility of establishing a modern baseline for genetic record keeping. The IGEA has successfully provided breeders with a transparent, verifiable genetic ledger, allowing them to accurately map out the progress of their breeding programs and monitor size stabilization with total scientific clarity.
IGEA reserves the right and final decision to approve or decline any registration application.
General Appearance & Temperament
Conformation Baseline: A compact, lighter Draft horse build possessing powerful, ample muscle and distinct flat bone. The entire frame must remain balanced in proportion, standing straight, square, and showing an alert look of confidence and intelligence. While some individuals may display a stockier build than others, features must never be overdone in bulk, ensuring the horse retains perfect body shape, harmony, and balance.
Character: Exceedingly loyal, respectful, docile, eager to please, and operating as a kind and willing partner.
Movement: Naturally flowing, correct, and completely effortless in appearance across all three true gaits: the walk, the trot, and the canter.
Conformation Specifics
Head & Expression: Noble, expressive, and sweet head showcasing a straight profile entirely free of coarseness. The head must be proportionate to the overall body size, featuring a clean, strong jaw, rounded cheekbones, and balanced width between the nostrils. An overly heavy Roman nose or an excessively dished face is highly discouraged.
Eyes, Ears, & Mouth: The mouth must present a completely even, level bite. All eye colors are fully accepted. Ears must be neat, well-set, and in perfect proportion to the head and frame.
Neck & Shoulders: Clean through the throatlatch, yet noticeably thicker and deeper than standard light horse breeds. The neck must be strong, well-muscled, balanced in length (not too short, not too long), and tie neatly into the shoulders and withers. A slightly arched neck is desired, with stallions exhibiting more prominent crest features without being overdone. Shoulders must be powerfully muscled, deep, and set at a well laid-back, sloping angle.
Chest, Back, & Body: Strong, broad chest balanced to the overall frame. The body is short-coupled, broad across the strong back, and deeply rounded from the shoulders to the flank. The loin must be short, wide, and structurally strong. The barrel must be deep with well-sprung ribs, showing plenty of depth from the wither to a deep girth. Withers are average in height relative to body size and well-covered in smooth flesh.
Hindquarters & Hind Legs: Generously muscled, broad, rounded, and powerful. When viewed directly from behind, the hindquarters must display the classic, well-rounded shape frequently described as an "apple butt." Hind legs must possess dense flat bone and heavy muscle, terminating in clean, straight, and powerful hocks.
Forelegs & Pasterns: Straight, dense flat bone set cleanly under the body with prominent, well-defined joints. Forearms must be long and heavily muscled. Pasterns must be perfectly balanced, cleanly matching the slope angle of the shoulder.
Hooves: Excellent, wide heels featuring highly developed frogs. Hooves must be inherently strong and tough, easily carrying the horse's dense frame without structural stress.
Coat, Hair, & Height Standards
Mane, Tail, & Facial Hair: Thick, abundant mane that may be a double mane (though a double mane is not strictly required). The forelock must be long and completely full. Tail hair must be highly abundant. Natural facial hair variations—including mustaches (muzzle and lip hair), whiskers, and full beards—are fully accepted traits of the breed.
Leg Feather: Abundant leg feather is a hallmark of the breed. Feather may start cleanly at or above the knee on the front legs, and at or above the hock on the hind legs. The hair must flow down both the front and back of the lower leg, completely and continuously covering the hoof all the way around.
Color and Markings: All genetic coat colors, structural white markings, and body patterns are 100% acceptable for registration.
Official Height Divisions: Measured strictly at physical maturity (Age 5 or older) at the absolute highest point of the wither:
Mini - Section A: 34 inches and under.
Mini - Section B: Over 34 inches, up to and including 38 inches.
Pony - Section C: Over 38 inches, up to and including 48 inches.
INTL Mini Gypsy Horse - Section D: up to and including 52 inches (13 Hands) at maturity with 75 % or more Gyspy Genetics.
